to produce classic, contemporary, and original performance works that reflect the minority experience, especially that of the African American.

This hit Broadway musical swings in to start the second season for On Q Productions. Based on the music of Fats Waller, this show re-lives the flourishing era of the Harlem Renaissance and turns the stage into a racy, raucous and playful evening of songs. Five performers present their interpretations of what it means to swing, while being backed by the Sign of the Times band, with direction by Jermaine Nakia Lee.

Ain't Misbehavin'

The 1980 Tony Award-nominated play, written by North Carolina native Samm-Art Williams, follows the life experiences of Cephus Miles, an everyday guy from a small Southern town. His journey begins on a farm he inherited from his family in South Carolina. He works diligently on the land, until his childhood sweetheart rejects him and goes off to college. After he is imprisoned for dodging the Vietnam War, he loses his land and moves to the big city. Cephus' dreams fade when he loses his job and new girlfriend and becomes involved in drugs and prostitution. He finally pulls himself together and

The third installment for the season, The Colored Museum by George C. Wolfe, is a series of vignettes that look at black culture post Vietnam era. This play travels through different eras to present black life in a satirical fashion. The show examines themes ranging from hair styles to slavery and leaves the audience in stitches, while giving thought to how African American have escaped centuries of suffering. Aisha Dew directs this show.

The Colored Museum

The final show of the season, Fabulation: or the reeducation of Undine, puts the black bourgeoisie under scrutiny and displays its social snobbery, shallow friendships and rejection of roots. This show written by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, Lynn Nottage, follows Undine, a well to do black executive, with an ill attitude, who finds out her company is bankrupt, after her husband leaves, but not before getting knocked up. She has to return home to a family to whom she hasn’t spoken to in years. In the end she is learns valuable lessons about family, love and life. Stacey Rose will direct.

On Q Productions brings the critically acclaim Day of Absence by Douglas Turner Ward, for CIAA week. This production was nominated for a 2009 Creative Loafing Theater award in Best Comedy category and won the award for Outstanding Lead Male in a Comedy, is back. This play starts off in a sleepy southern town during the Jim Crow era. Its white citizens are ready for another day for business as usual, till they realize that all of their black citizens have disappeared without a trace. The town eventually falls into panic and the outcome is that the town will never be the same again. Quentin “Q”
